چکیده

We consider linear least squares problems, or linear systems that can be formulated into least squares problems, of very large dimension, such as those arising for example in dynamic programming (DP) and inverse problems. We introduce an associated approximate problem, within a subspace spanned by a relatively small number of basis functions, and solution methods that use simulation, importance sampling, and low-dimensional calculations. The main components of this methodology are a regression/regularization approach that can deal with nearly singular problems, and an importance sampling design approach that exploits existing continuity structures in the underlying models, and allows the solution of very large problems. We also investigate the use of our regression/regularization approach in temporal difference-type methods in the context of approximate DP. Finally we demonstrate the application of our methodology in a series of practical large-scale examples arising from Fredholm integral equations of the first kind. Thesis Supervisor: Dimitri P. Approximate Solution of Sensitivity Matrix of Required Velocity Using Piecewise Linear Gravity Assumption

In this paper, an approximate solution of sensitivity matrix of required velocity with final velocity constraint is derived using a piecewise linear gravity assumption. The total flight time is also fixed for the problem. Simulation results show the accuracy of the method. Increasing the midway points for linearization, increases the accuracy of the solution, which this, in turn, depends on the...

Analytical Solution of Steady State Substrate Concentration of an Immobilized Enzyme Kinetics by Laplace Transform Homotopy Perturbation Method

The nonlinear dynamical system modeling the immobilized enzyme kinetics with Michaelis-Menten mechanism for an irreversible reaction without external mass transfer resistance is considered. Laplace transform homotopy perturbation method is used to obtain the approximate solution of the governing nonlinear differential equation, which consists in determining the series solution convergent to the...

Nonlinear Optimal Control Techniques Applied to a Launch Vehicle Autopilot

This paper presents an application of the nonlinear optimal control techniques to the design of launch vehicle autopilots. The optimal control is given by the solution to the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation, which in this case cannot be solved explicity. A method based upon Successive Galerkin Approximation (SGA), is used to obtain an approximate optimal solution. Simulation results invo...

High Accuracy Relative Motion of Spacecraft Using Linearized Time-Varying J2-Perturbed Terms

This paper presents a set of linearized equations was derived for the motion, relative to an elliptical reference orbit, of an object influenced by J2 perturbation terms. Approximate solution for simulations was used to compare these equations and the linearized keplerian equations to the exact equations. The inclusion of the linearized perturbations in the derived equations increased the high ...

Elimination of Hard-Nonlinearities Destructive Effects in Control Systems Using Approximate Techniques

Many of the physical phenomena, like friction, backlash, drag, and etc., which appear in mechanical systems are inherently nonlinear and have destructive effects on the control systems behavior. Generally, they are modeled by hard nonlinearities. In this paper, two different methods are proposed to cope with the effects of hard nonlinearities which exist in friction various models. Simple inver...

Transient Characteristics of a Single-Effect Absorption Refrigeration Cycle

This paper deals with a lumped-parameter dynamic simulation of a single-effect LiBr-H2O absorption chiller. In many studies the thermodynamic properties of LiBr-H2O solution were taken from some approximate relations causing the results to be somewhat inaccurate. These relations were used to solve simultaneous differential equations involving the continuity of species constituting the LiBr-H2O ...
